In 1828, a man with French and Native American ancestry, named Ogee, built a cabin in present day Dixon, and established a ferry there. Two years later, in 1830, John Dixon, from whom the city takes its name, purchased Ogee's claim and interest in the ferry and settled in the area with his family. He called the town Dixon’s Ferry.
Shortly before the outbreak of the Black Hawk War in 1832, Dixon's Ferry was a quiet and lonely outpost. But, hostilities and confrontations with the white settlers from Black Hawk and his followers turned Dixon's Ferry into a major military camp. Fort Dixon was established as the central command post during the early stages of the Black Hawk War. Notable figures in our nation's history, including Abraham Lincoln, Zachary Taylor and Jefferson Davis served in the army in Dixon.
In 1911, almost a decade after Dixon was settled, President Ronald Regan was born in nearby Tampiko, and attended high school in Dixon.
