In 2001, Pat Quinn walked 167 miles across Illinois from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan as part of a campaign for better health care. Today, Walk Across Illinois honors Governor Quinn's legacy with free health initiatives that help people achieve fit and healthy lifestyles through walking and other physical activities.

In the early 1800s, before European settlers came to Illinois, the Blackhawk Native American Tribe lived in this area. The Chicago Blackhawks hockey team is named after the Indian Tribe who lived in the Joliet area.
